ETS Drift Ute – Are we there yet?

I have been smashing through the hours on the Hilux build lately, you wouldn’t believe how much time every single little detail takes, some days things just seem to fall into place and others just seem impossible, read on to see whats been going on.

Ive moved the radiator into about ten different positions and have settled on this, i have a 450x300x75 Tube and Fin intercooler on its way to sit behind this, it will sit upright and create a nice air gap between the two, for air i am thinking two 12″ fans sitting between the two, thats still to be confirmed though.

With the cab back on i am filling the gaps with sheet metal so that no smoke or tyre junk gets into the cabin.

I have welded the rear firewall in and starting to think about sealing and containing the tailshaft, i have made an alloy tube thats pressed into the rear of the gearbox and then the 100mm alloy tube slides over that, then a cone is welded into the cab wall with the centre bearing sitting just after it, i am leaving the gearbox exposed and sealing everything around it, more on that later.

Im still not sold on this idea so i havnt welded it in, theres a removable alloy plate that will be drilled for the fuel brake and electrical bulkhead fittings. Theres still a lot to do, stay tuned as its non stop from here on in!

  3. Why put the intercooler behind the radiator? Seems against the grain, your rejecting heat from a radiator that would be around ~90 to 120degrees under load and the hot air is getting transferred through and on to the intercooler Behind it. thus decreasing the efficiency of the intercooler as your super heating the ambient air say 30degrees and making it potentialy upwards of +50degrees before hitting the intercooler? It would be worth running a temp sensOr behind the radiator on the 180 or even your ute to get an idea of potentially the air temp your putting on the intercooler and increasing your inlet temps.

  4. Your tailshaft cover conundrum looks like a hard one to solve neatly.
The cup over the box and tube/cone bolted to the rear firewall is an awesome idea.
I personally would want something more subsatntial than thin ally plate though, its doubtful a tailshaft will snap but more for impact protection if your seat gets shunted into it or something terrible along those lines….
