As described in my last post on the 180SX the manifold to turbine housing gasket all but disappeared at the last drift meeting of 2011, so I thought I would fix things for good. After V ing out the BRAE manifold and turbine housing I bolted them together, heated them up, TIG welded them, reheated it and then dumped it in a bucket of lime to cool slowly, job done..

That manifold looks a bit beat up, what happened with the cracks above the mounting holes?
Nigel
Its laser cut that way for expansion etc, ive ran it all year and its perfect except for some scratches

is the turbo housing cast? Im interested to see how it will last if it is… weld looks good. nice work.
Dan
IIRC it is welded steam bends so not cast but still quite heavy so holds the heat well and should be quite tough.

Dumb question but what does dropping it in lime acheive?
Liam
^^slows the cooling

Im surprised that you TIG’ed it as opposed to MIG.
you can use sand instead of lime as well. it just prevents the metal contracting too fast after heating.

Hey Nigel,
I did this once, works well. But i noticed hairline crack in the middle of the welds all accross… no leaks but just saw the crack there.
Cheers
