ETS Drift Ute – Fuel System Revised

After throwing around a heap of ideas i have come up with a fuel tank design that will suit my chassis, the tank will sit between the webbing of the rear chassis work behind the passenger seat. The tall design and tapered spun alloy ends should keep things simple by negating the need for a surge tank. Does anyone see any issues with this design?

  2. i personally think its a great idea… i mean worst comes to worse you could always run a small pickup pump intank… but i dont personally see the need for it… flow should be fine especially with the 044 holding the reins

  3. fuel might still tend to want to ‘ride up’ the side of the tank when g’s hit it, so maybe at the bottom you could have a horizonal baffle? like maybe a big flat plate with a hole only in the middle, so that no matter what direction the fuel wants to slosh, its is constrained at the bottom of the tank (within the dished area) and the fuel pickup is always sure to have fuel. you’d have to do this before putting the spun ends on though. or you could just make sure it is always half full… lol.

  4. sorry i just seen the central bit with holes in it. if doing the above, bring the holes down lower, or move the baffle plate upwards above the holes. cheers. lovin the build btw!

  5. just one last thought, is there any need for such a big tank? maybe just have a smaller one and full it to the brim before you head out for competition? if its full, the fuel has nowhere to go, so you’d be fine whatever the design is.

    • More than one race team have been caught out low on fuel at the drift grid. I believe that under most competition rules you’re not allowed to enter the pits between tandem runs etc. And with re-runs and idling it’s better to lean on the safer side. I imagine whatever engine Nigel’s running will destroy fuel at ‘cringe rate’ too 😀

  6. What is ‘the foam area’?

  7. Yep ive deleted the need for foam and now its a 10″ x 24″ design, that will hold just on 30 litres which at the moment lasts me an entire day of driving in my 180SX

  8. from a physics standpoint, as far as the sloshing goes… as long as you have a reasonable amount of gas (not just in the very bottom), hard corners will push gas from one side to the other, but the gas level (aside from slight natural splashing) will remain constant in the center of the tank from which your feed pulls. the idea from Nick’s first post is a good idea, but would only be needed for hard cornering at very low levels of fuel.

  10. As long as it doesn’t go to pieces in a crash; its fine by me,

    Fire isn’t a joke.
