Two completely different cars both built for very similar purposes, what are the simularites and which one will be used once the Hilux is finished?
The idea behind the hilux was very simple, build a tube frame in the confines of a single cab hilux body, use the wheelbase from a JZX 100 and then use off the shelf S13/14/15 running gear and suspension to build a unique, low budget, lightweight drift ute.
But how different will the ute be to drive compared to the 180SX? They share a heap of parts, will have the excact same power level, the utes 150mm longer than the 180SX, the utes center of gravity, roll center and suspension geometry will be much more suited to drifting, the steering rack is a lot further forward to elimanate any binding at extreme steering angle, the utes motor is a lot further back than the 180sx these are all things that make the ute possibly more favorable to drive than the 180SX.
2012 will be a defining year for the ute build, it wont be used in competition until possibly 2013 but thats not to say it wont be out on track a heap. I plan on keeping it as an exhibition vehicle and having the 180SX do the majority of the seasons competitions.
Its going to be interesting to feel the difference between the two and also how much things like roll center and center of gravity play in the world of drifting. It will be a massive learning curve for me and it may shape my idea of the ideal drift car.

Nigel, this ute is awesome. I’m just starting to really get into racecar chassis/suspension/brake design at my Uni, and this is definately going to be inspiration for my own project in the future 🙂
Nigel
Glad i could be of inspiration to you 🙂 all the best

compare the pair? same income? same super contributions?
I think whats most important is which one pays commissions to financial advisors, is your super fund with cbus?
haha, can’t wait to see this in person Nigel!
Nigel
Haha, good one 🙂 You will see it next weekend
